Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is a common, yet complex emotion, that affects many of us. It’s more than just occasional worry or stress; it’s a persistent feeling of unease that can interfere with daily life at school, work or home. I wanted to share a little insight into anxiety and how the power of one tool can manage it.

So what Is Anxiety?
Anxiety manifests in our lives in many ways such as racing thoughts, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and physical symptoms like a rapid heartbeat. It’s our body’s natural response to stress, but when it becomes overwhelming, it can hinder our ability to function effectively.

There are many ways to handle anxiety: The Power of Writing
One method that has been proven to help cope with anxiety is writing. Expressive writing allows us to process our thoughts and emotions, providing clarity and relief. You don’t have to write pages and pages, you don’t have to worry about what or how you write, just the power of getting our emotions, thoughts and feelings out of our head and onto paper can make our brains less reactive and more focused, helping us become less distracted.
Journaling offers a safe space to explore feelings without judgment. It helps in organising thoughts and disrupting patterns of negative thinking.

So you’re thinking, id like to write things down, but no idea how to start? I’ve listed a few prompts to help you begin:

  • What is causing me to feel anxious right now?
  • What can I control in this situation?
  • What would I say to a friend experiencing these feelings?
  • Can I look at this situation in a different way?
  • Write the raw emotions, the anger, sadness, the happiness, whatever words, thoughts that come in, list them all out. Then sit back and look at what each word is bringing up for you

Final Thoughts
Anxiety is a challenging experience, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Writing is just one therapeutic practice to navigate through anxious moments.
Remember, acknowledging your feelings is the first step toward healing.
